The NBA All-Star Game MVP award might not carry the prestige of its regular season peers, but it’s a nice accolade to add to a player’s resume. While it’s an exhibition game, there is still something special in being best of the best in the midseason showpiece.

Giannis Antetokounmpo won the award in 2021, and he’s among the NBA MVP odds favorites. He tops the betting market ahead of LeBron James and regular season MVP favorite Joel Embiid. Six of the last eight All-Star MVPs are not involved in the 2022 game, leaving a high likelihood that we get a new face holding the trophy.

Previous All-Star Success

Chris Paul, LeBron James and Giannis Antetokounmpo are the only previous All-Star Game MVPs slated to play on Sunday. It’s possible Paul sits the game out after suffering a hand injury against Houston a couple of days ago.

Antetokounmpo was at his dominant best in the 2021 edition, clocking 35 points in a Team LeBron victory. The Greek Freak has played some spectacular basketball this season, and where others might coast, he’s bound to compete. LeBron has won the award three times in the past, the most recent of which was in 2018.

James will tie Bob Pettit and Kobe Bryant for the most All-Star MVPs of all-time if he picks up the trophy a fourth time.

Wanting To Win

All-Star MVP is generally handed to the player with the most points on the winning team. LeBron once again came out with a stronger looking roster from the draft, resulting in being favored by 5.5 points — Team LeBron players seem to be at an advantage when it comes to winning MVP as a result.

With the limited defense played, and sheer talent across the two teams, motivation can often be what makes the difference. Some players go through the motions of All-Star or have games that aren’t suited to showboating (looking at you, Rudy).

Steph Curry can put on a show without overly exerting himself, just as we saw in his three-point explosion last year. Alongside James, Antetokounmpo and Nikola Jokic on Team LeBron, the two-time regular season MVP is a good value bet to win his first All-Star Game MVP. Curry hasn’t been shooting the ball as well as he usually does in 2022, but after jacking up 16 threes in the All-Star Game last year, he could easily put up some huge numbers.

James is an interesting prospect here. He’s been carrying a heavy load for the Lakers of late, which could make him cruise through Sunday’s game. Alternatively, he might view this as a chance to perform in his hometown with the Lakers’ season unlikely to amount to much. The price, though, is probably on the short side given that he played just 13 minutes last year.

Longshot Picks

Keeping the Nuggets relevant in NBA Championship odds and with a game to shine on the All-Star stage, it would be foolish to overlook Nikola Jokic here. He’s bound to provide some jaw-dropping dimes, and could join the three-point barrage. The odds are good for a player of his caliber.

If you fancy Team Durant to pull off an upset, the young guard duo of Morant and Trae Young are worthy of consideration. Both players love the big stage and have games to entertain — expect arena-shaking dunks from Morant and long-range treys galore from Young.

It’s easy to get intrigued by Luka Doncic at +1000, but minutes and effort are an issue. He’s coming off the bench, and having put the Mavericks on his back over the last month or so, is he going to be engaged enough to compete for MVP?

Best bets: Steph Curry (+900), Nikola Jokic (+1900), Trae Young (+2300)
