Pick #1: Kofi Cockburn Under 19.5 Points

The first bet to target is under 19.5 points for Illinois’ Kofi Cockburn. We backed the Wooden Award odds finalist in the First Round, but that was in a soft matchup. Now he faces Houston, one of the premier defenses in all of college basketball.

The Cougars were one of the last four teams standing in the Final Four odds a year ago, and have the talent to make another deep run this season. They’re one of only two teams in the nation who ranked top-11 in both offensive and defensive efficiency per KenPom.

The other, Gonzaga who has by far the shortest odds to win March Madness. Houston has allowed an average of only 60 points over its past four games, and has the size to match up with Cockburn in the paint.

Josh Carlton is a 6-11 force down the middle, and one of the reasons the Cougars have excelled at limiting enemy shooters. Houston ranks first in the nation in opponent field goal percentage, and ninth from inside the three-point line, where Cockburn does most of his damage.

Cockburn has failed to reach 20 points in six of his past 11 games, and none of the opponents he faced during that stretch grade out as well defensively as the Cougars.

Also working in favor of the under is Cockburn’s dreadful free-throw percentage. He was 5-of-10 from the line in the First Round, and is making less than 65% of his attempts from the charity stripe this season.

Pick #2: Jabari Smith Over 2.5 Threes

Next up, let’s target over 2.5 three’s for Auburn’s Jabari Smith. The projected top-3 pick in this year’s Draft has been sizzling from beyond the arc recently, splashing at least three triples in five straight outings, and in six of his past seven contests overall.

He’s made 28 of his past 54 three point attempts (51.8%), and is fresh off burying four three’s in the First Round.

All but one of those games was against strong SEC competition, and now he gets to face Miami, who is dreadful versus opposing shooters. The Hurricanes rank 319th in the country in opponent field goal percentage, and are 278th at defending the three-point line.

Smith’s case to go first overall gets stronger after torching Miami on Sunday.
