All Square After First Leg

Erik ten Hag’s men had hoped to return home from Lisbon with the win that would put them in control of the tie. But they had to settle for a 2-2 draw in what was a thrilling first leg. Dusan Tadic gave the Dutch champions the perfect start with an early goal. However, this was canceled out just eight minutes later when Sebastien Haller turned the ball into his own net.

The Cote d’Ivoire international soon made amends though and just three minutes after his own goal he found the Benfica net to put Ajax 2-1 ahead. The Dutch could not hold on for the win though with Ukrainian international Roman Yaremchuk scoring the all-important equalizer on 72 minutes.

Seven Wins on Spin at Home for Ajax

While in the immediate fallout from that draw, Ajax found themselves on the receiving end of a shock defeat by Go Ahead Eagles, they have since managed to string together three consecutive wins in Eredivisie and the Dutch Cup. They’ll come into this huge game in a good place.

Not since 2018-19 have Ajax managed to make it beyond the Champions League group stages. However, they look well placed to do so this season if they can take the early initiative against a Benfica team who will also still believe they are in this tie. Ajax’s home form has been excellent, having won their last seven in Amsterdam in all competitions, scoring at least three times in each game.

Benfica Unbeaten in Seven

A home draw with lowly Vizela on Friday was not the ideal preparation for this game for Benfica. But to put it into some sort of context, they played with ten men for 82 minutes after Adel Taarabt was shown red early on. In reality, it was not the disastrous result it looks at first glance and they have long since given up hope of winning the Primeira Liga crown this season.

In fact, by earning a draw Benfica extended their unbeaten run to seven games in all competitions. Although it did end an impressive six-game run of scoring at least twice. However, all eyes will now be focused on the Champions League as they look to end a disappointing run of not having made it beyond the last 16 since the 2015-16 season.

Poor UCL Away Form for Benfica

Benfica’s form has generally been quite good after a slow start to the campaign. Not since losing 3-0 to Porto back in December in the Portuguese Cup have they failed to score in a competitive game. On the flip side, they have won only once away from home in their last 14 Champions League away games.

Also worth noting is that their 2-2 first-leg draw with Ajax three weeks ago stretched their winless run against the Dutch champions to seven matches. It’s a run that incredibly dates back to 1969. This remains a huge ask for The Eagles, who have many obstacles to overcome to win this game.

Ajax vs Benfica Best Bets

With a question mark hanging over Yaremchuk’s availability for this game for obvious reasons, it’s hard to see Benfica getting the job done in Amsterdam. Instead it is a case of trying to predict the size of the Ajax win. For me, the +1000 on offer for the 3-0 home win offers great value.

Picks: Ajax to win 3-0 (+1000) / Ajax -2.0 spread (+185)
