New York vs Tampa Bay Probable Pitchers

The Yankees have only managed a 3-5 record in German’s eight starts, but the 30-year-old has performed relatively well since being inserted into the rotation in late July. Three of his last four turns have been of the quality variety and the Dominican native went 2-1 with a 2.08 ERA over 34.2 innings in August.

German was dominant in his most recent outing on Saturday against Oakland. He went 7.2 scoreless innings and allowed only three hits and no walks while striking out five in an eventual 3-2 loss to the A’s.

Meantime, the 29-year-old Springs has been a revelation since being inserted into Tampa’s starting rotation in late April. The Rays have gone 12-6 in the lefty’s starts and 17-9 overall whenever he gets the ball. Only four of his outings have been of the quality vintage, but Springs have proven to be a valuable asset in the seemingly bottomless supply of talent in the Rays organization.

Springs got roughed up a bit in his most recent outing on Saturday against the Red Sox. He went six innings — allowing eight hits, five earned runs and a walk while striking out eight in an eventual 5-1 loss.

To say the Yankees are on the verge of imploding would be misleading. They’re well beyond that. The club is 14-24 since the break and New York only mustered three hits in a 3-2 loss to the Angels on Wednesday in losing a series to the second-division Halos. That’s after splitting a four-game set with the even-worse A’s. Then, there’s this.

Rizzo has missed 10 games with the back issue since July 5th. Since then, he’s slashed just .212/.297/.394 with a .694 OPS, 23 strikeouts and three home runs in 74 at-bats.

Meantime, Tampa placed ace Shane McClanahan on the injured list on Wednesday — but are still coming off a fantastic month. The AL Wild Card leaders went 18-9 in August and have put themselves in a position to shave New York’s AL East lead to only three games. Manuel Margot was the hero in a 2-1 extra-inning victory over the Marlins.

Randy Arozarena and Isaac Paredes are the only two players on the roster with double-digit home runs (each have 18). But this franchise continues to thumb its figurative nose at conventional wisdom and win.

The Rays have +4500 odds to win the Fall Classic, while the Yankees are at +450 in the World Series odds.

Yankees vs Rays  Prediction

The Bombers are certainly happy the calendar has flipped to September; the group compiled an ugly 10-19 mark during the dog days. But with so many players in and out of the lineup outside of a handful of stalwarts, Boone’s group seems to be hanging by a thread.

Meantime, the Rays are once again playing with house money and figure to continue their winning ways in the series opener.

Pick: Rays ML (-125)
